A Gran Fondo is to cyclists what a Marathon is to runners. For years “weekend warrior” cyclists have been looking for a competitive, challenging event. The “Gran Fondo” which originated in Italy addresses this void. In recent years, Gran Fondos have become the most popular mass-participation cycling events for cycling enthusiasts in North America.
Gran Fondo NJ
Gran Fondo NJ offers a choice of route lengths and timed hill segments that wind their way through some of New Jersey’s best cycling roads. Starting and ending in historic Morristown, NJ this combination of bike touring and timed climbs attracts a wide range of cyclists from the casual weekend rider to the well-trained endurance athlete.
Gran Fondo NJ is a Ride not a Race
Gran Fondo NJ provides plenty of challenges to its participants without the added pressure, stress and inherent dangers of a bike race. We do not provide Start/Finish timing. The competitive aspect of the event is limited to only the timed climbs on the four longer routes. Cyclists can feed their competitive needs while fighting gravity on these climbs, and take it easy on the sections of route and our rest stops in between.
More than a bike ride
Gran Fondo NJ is a full weekend of festivals, expos and other activities offering entertainment for the entire family culminating in the ride and post-ride celebrations. Along with raffles, great food, local shopping and our Kid’s Fondo there’s something for every member of the family. There is also an optional fundraising component to the event – it has been used by riders supporting local and national charities and has generated over $1,000,000 in donations since its inception.
Gran Fondo NJ 2017 offers five routes of increasing levels of challenge, from the extremely challenging Gran Fondo down to the relatively relaxed Breve Fondo. We were one of, if not the first Gran Fondo to offer a Breve length route for those not up to the challenge of a longer route, but wanting to partake in the festive atmosphere of a Gran Fondo. All routes begin and end in historic Morristown, New Jersey.
- Gran Fondo 107 miles - By far our most popular route.
- Migrane Fondo 75 miles - The perfect stepping stone to the Gran.
- Medio Fondo 62 miles - Our Medio Fondo route was selected by the editors of Bicycling Magazine as one of "The 50 Best Rides in America."
- Piccolo Fondo 42 miles – provides a taste the Gran Fondo experience.
- Breve Fondo 18 miles - This is the easiest of the four routes.
Our Rest Stops
The Rest Stops at Gran Fondo NJ are not the usual stops that you would expect on a century or club ride. You will quickly come to realize this when you pull into Gladstone the first stop on the Piccolo, Medio and Gran Routes and are greeted by cheerleaders and Seeing Eye puppies before you even get to the food and refreshments.
Our riders have come to expect the wide assortment of fresh locally grown fruits, along with special feature foods supplied by our event caterer or by local cafes and bakeries along our routes. From cannolis to massive cookies to cake pops, the food is so good you may think you have mistakenly crashed a wedding reception.
We do recognize that our participants need the energy to finish the challenging routes so we offer a wide assortment of cycling nutrition products to fuel you up the seemingly endless hills along the way.
If you happen to have a mechanical issue, you’ll find our teams of mechanics can handle pretty much anything to help you get back on your adventure.
